'Rover'
My drawing is of a Jersey calf, who is being taken for a walk in the park by his owner. His name is Rover and he is a very young calf. I've portrayed him as though he were a pet dog, to juxtapose the kind of life the two animals might lead... A dog is loved and walked and cherished and played with, whereas a calf like Rover would have been taken from his mum at just a couple of days old, so she can continue to produce milk for the dairy industry. He may be shot, sent to the abattoir or sold for veal. What is the real difference between these animals, both of whom have very similar capacities to experience life? One is loved, one is a by-product.
About Rebecca
I work primarily in graphite pencil and pen and ink. I love the detail and depth that can be achieved with these mediums and feel they help me to capture and convey some of the beauty and complexity of nature. My subjects are almost invariably wildlife: they have been since childhood and I have never lost my fascination with animals. Over the years I have been inspired and tutored by other graphite artists, such as Mike Sibley and JD Hillberry. More recently, I have been exploring pen and ink, watercolour and acrylics and am moving away from realism and am enjoying experimenting with a more free style and use of colour.
To date, my work has been more focussed on conveying the beauty of animals, so this project was a fresh challenge for me which I have really enjoyed.
